Greek activists take on the power company

An activist opens an electricity meter to reconnect a needy family near Veria, northern Greece, as another man holds a sticker reading 'Citizens of Veria. Social Solidarity. We reconnect power,' on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. As two years of pay cuts and tax hikes pummel living standards in debt-crippled Greece, many in this northern town can't pay for basic utilities such as electricity _ and get cut off from the grid. That's where the 'Citizens of Veria' activists step in, illegally reconnecting needy households in a direct challenge to the power corporation.
